Spring cleaning can feel pretty overwhelming when you aren't sure which items in your closet you should keep and which you should get rid of. In the past I was guilty of this, being indecisive of what I will wear again and what to toss. Here are some helpful tips that will allow you to stay organized and tidy, while letting go of what's out of style!
Start by taking everything out and placing it onto the floor or somewhere else so that everything is visible at once.
Have piles specifically for donations, trash, etc. so that you have an organized place to start.
Take note of how much of each item you have. For example, if you have 20 casual t-shirts, but only one nice blouse, consider tossing some casual tees to make room for a few nicer shirts.
Apply the two-year rule: If you haven't worn the garment in 2+ years, it's time for the garment to go.
Be sure to focus on color: the more neutral colors you have, the more you can get away with. Stay focused on tossing out more bold colors or patterns that may be out of style.
Make a list of what your closet is lacking. When you get rid of things, you can buy some new garments to replace the void.
If you have to question if you're going to wear it, get rid of it. The same thing applies when shopping in stores, if you don't love it, it's not worth keeping.
Make sure to stay organized: Avoid clutter so there aren't any garments that have fallen through the cracks.
Buy clothing for a capsule wardrobe. These are pieces that remain classic for very long periods of time.
Quality over quantity. When buying new items after spring cleaning, make sure the quality of the garment is high-end. It's worth paying a bit more so you can get a lot more use out of the clothing.
Take note of the purses and shoes you haven't worn in ages.
Be sure to focus on storage opportunities. Whether it's storage bins, folding clothes effectively, etc., it is important to make the most out of your storage.
